Books of the Week

onedesire.jpg This week’s books are a pair of novels produced by two members of the Missouri Romance Writers of America.

Kimberly Killion’s debut story, Her One Desire, brings a fresh story set in 15th century England between Lizbeth Ives, daughter of King Edward’s Lord High Executioner and about to be executed Scottish spy, Broc Maxwell.   Escaping bloodthirsty villains, conspiracy and romance flourish as the pair flee across the border.

Early reviews declare this book to be a winner as Ms. Killion deftly blends fact and fiction without overwhelming the reader about the complex politics of the period.  Add in sizzling sexual tension and an attractive $3.99 special price and I foresee a great afternoon escape.

fakefiancee.jpgMegan Kelly’s second Harlequin American romance is also out this month.  The Fake Fiancée uses a tried and true plot of boy needs girl to pretend to be his fiancée in order to get his mother off his back and girl needs boy’s business to keep her catering company from going under.  Ms. Kelly keeps the plot fresh by tossing in a cast of secondary characters to mix things up while Joe Riley, a gorgeous playboy and corporate shark, and Lisa Meyer, a struggling small business owner and single mom court each other in public and in private.

Don’t dismiss this book just because it’s a Harlequin category novel.  I’m reading Megan Kelly’s first book – Marrying the Boss – now and finding some of her insights into daily and family life to be honest and refreshing.

Enjoy!

Weekend Recipe Experiment

chili_dog_sauce_med.gifI love chili dogs, but it’s been a long, long time since the A&W dogs of my youth.  No matter how many chili sauces I’ve tried, nothing has come close to the memories.

Today someone sent me a compilation of recipes that I suspect come out of a copyrighted Kitchen Secrets book and it has a recipe for recreating the chili sauce purported to be of A&W fame.  I think I’ll give it a shot this weekend and see if it lives up to the famous name!

———————————–
A&W Coney Island Chili Dog Sauce

1 pound ground chuck
1 six ounce can Hunts tomato paste
1 Cup water
1 Tablespoon sugar
1 Tablespoon prepared yellow mustard
1 Tablespoon dried, minced onion
2 teaspoons chili powder
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon celery seed
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin (heaping)
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

Making the Chili Dog Sauce:

1. In a 2 qt. saucepan, brown the ground chuck, breaking into very small pieces. Salt and pepper lightly while cooking. Do not drain the fat.

2. Add the remaining ingredients. Simmer uncovered, 30−45 minutes until the sauce thickens. Stir occasionally.

3. Allow to cool, cover, and refrigerate until “Dog−Time”.

Yup, I see me some chili dogs in my future!  How about you?

Thought of the Week

cell_sm.jpgI saw a new commercial on TV last night while The Bob was watching the baseball game.  It opens with a man walking down the street on a gray day, with hundreds of people rushing by deep in their own misery.

Then the man’s cell phone rings and he answers it, smiling and laughing and enjoying his conversation with the unseen other party.  Around him, people react to his cheeriness with their own smiles and the day grows brighter and happier as neighbor helps neighbor and goodwill overflows the city streets.  By the end of the commercial, the city is one big happy family of smiling love for each other.

Meanwhile, the guy’s been on the phone the whole time as he walked down the street.  Magically, the oncoming waves of people cheerfully part for someone who completely ignores them because he’s talking on his phone, absorbed in his happy, happy conversation.  When he hangs up, he’s still grinning foolishly and looks around him at the wonderful world he’s obliviously created.

As I see it, the commercial wants us to believe being in contact with people who make us happy will make not only our lives better, but those around us as well.

As much as I hate the surface message of the commercial – that we all need a cell phone and need to talk to our happy people all the time – there’s a certain truth to the subliminal message.  If we’re having a bad day and take it out on those around us, everyone is miserable.  If we take the time to smile and say “thank you” (with sincerity) to the girl who hands us our overpriced coffee, we’ve made both our days a fraction brighter.  I like that idea.  More importantly, I like the idea of taking the time to see the people around us and acknowledge their existence.  (And that usually means getting off the cell phone to do it.)

If the commercial were mine to make, I’d probably film it a little differently.  We’d have our guy walking down the street, smiling and cheerful while talking on his cell phone.  Then he’d hang up as he picks out his newspaper from the street side vendor and they’ll exchange good-natured jibes about the local sports team.  When the phone rings as he’s in the line at the bank, he’ll silence the ringer and apologize for the loud tune to the people waiting in line. (They’ll all be grinning happily, of course, since his five year old niece picked out the ringtone.)  He’ll pay for his groceries without having the cell phone in his ear, instead asking the clerk how her day has been going.  Maybe at the end of the commercial, when he’s at home, he’ll take a long neck out of the fridge, wander out onto the deck and call his mother back as he settles into a lounge chair to watch the sun go down.

Same message, different approaches.

Crochet A Purse

I like to knit and crochet.  Used to cross-stitch, but my eyes aren’t what they used to be.  I’m also the queen of finding free patterns for projects on the internet.  So I thought I’d share some of my finds with you once in awhile.

Today’s pattern is for crocheters and uses an interesting nylon thread called Omega LaEspiga #18.  It comes in 74 colors (although I can only find a handful locally), so you can find one to please you, and it’s not particularly expensive.  This purse is cute and you can mix the colors to match your own personality.  The nylon thread makes a nicely substantial purse that you don’t have to worry about putting on the floor under your desk or tossing in the seat of your car.  Use this thread with a different pattern to make a nice reusable market bag too!

The website where this pattern comes from also sells the Omega nylon in all its colors!

I’m currently making another purse pattern on the same website, the Dreamboat, in a golden yellow and variegated with fuchsia, turquoise, and yellow and I like the way it’s turning out. Let me know what you think of this pattern!
