On Flying First Class…

When The Bob and I decided to take our trip to Hawaii for our honeymoon/20th wedding anniversary, we debated about flying first class or not.  The cost is, well, exorbitant.  So the question is, as always, is it worth the price?

Since the flight from Dallas to Honolulu was 8 hours, The Bob knew I would not be a happy camper, squished into a center seat for that length of time.  Oh, he’d have given up the window seat, I’m sure, but I wouldn’t have counted on being any more comfortable there.

Should we really pay out the nose for the extra comfort and amenities of first class?  We waffled back and forth, the dollar signs in my eyes making the decision for me.  Then he’d point out how we’d probably only make this trip once and why shouldn’t we be allowed to treat ourselves?  Besides, there’s no one to leave an inheritance to.  So we splurged.

Oh. My.

We flew a 767 to Honolulu and the first class cabin is amazing.  I could hardly meet the eyes of the masses as they flowed past us to their coach cabin.  To begin with, each seat is capable of extending and reclining to a full 6′6″.  Which means that I had to practically crawl three feet from my chair to the seat in front of me to get to my purse and tote bag.  I’m not kidding.

The food.  Salmon, short ribs, pasta, champagne, strawberry sundaes, honey-wheat rolls.  Bailey’s Irish Cream.  (I winced again when the purser announced that turkey wraps could be purchased in coach and they apologize in advance if they ran out before they got to your row.)

Because we were comfortable and well fed, getting off the plane was a joy.  Getting back on the plane to come home was less of a joy, but at least I knew I wasn’t going to be a squished Pam when I got off 8 hours later.  So yes, I think it was worth the price.  It helps that it was paid for six months ago, too.

We’ll start out the pictures with a classic sunset shot for you.
