There’s a four-way stop near my workplace that I use just about everyday, usually twice a day.
I don’t know where people get their driver’s education at, but I’m pretty sure everyone teaches four-way stops differently.
Some teach them as stop-and-go. Some must teach drivers that if the car in front of you is turning left, that turn doesn’t really count, so you can go too. Then there’s the whole thing about who really truly arrived at the four way first. This particular four-way is particularly aggressive, with drivers on cell phones clearly taking their turns before anyone else and those that see the train up ahead not bothering to worry about blocking the intersection for those of us who aren’t going in that direction.
Occasionally I sit at that four-way, wondering if it’s really my turn or not. I thought it would be good to review the Illinois Rules of the Road.
“…when more than one driver reaches a four-way stop intersection. The first driver to stop should be the first to go. When two vehicles on different roadways arrive at a four-way stop intersection at the same time, the vehicle on the left should yield to the vehicle on the right.”
I had to draw a map to figure that one out. First of all, the vehicle on the left of what? If it’s the vehicle to the left of me…then I’m always giving the right of way away to the other driver, aren’t I? Even if he’s on my right, I end up walking the four-way around in a clockwise manner and he’s eventually “it”.
They say a picture’s worth a thousand words though.

I wonder how they can paint this on the roadway so everyone else learns the rules too?
